As World COPD Day approaches on 19 November, concerns rise about many Western Australians living with undiagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), one of the state’s most overlooked respiratory health issues. COPD affects Indigenous people 2.2 times more often than non-Indigenous Australians.
In Western Australia, Respiratory Care WA collaborates with Arche Health through the Wangen Murduin Integrated Team Care (ITC) Program. This initiative offers culturally appropriate outreach and lung-function screening specifically for First Nations communities.
“I had never heard of the condition until my GP sent me for chest X-rays and diagnosed me with emphysema,” said Geoffrey, a proud Noongar man diagnosed through this program. “Since receiving a COPD diagnosis and help from Respiratory Care WA, I've been able to stay active and involved in my community, something I struggled with before.”
Geoffrey underwent lung function testing with Respiratory Care WA’s community outreach team, which led to his diagnosis and improved management of his condition.
Author’s summary: COPD remains widely undiagnosed, especially among Indigenous Australians who face over twice the risk, highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive screening programs.
