Kerry Stokes, the last of the media moguls, is not done yet

Kerry Stokes has spent his life building a television network and newspaper empire. As he chaired his final annual general meeting for Seven West Media, he made it clear he still feels energetic and engaged with the industry’s future.

Final AGM and Retirement Decision

On Thursday, Mr. Stokes oversaw his last shareholder meeting, which ran for 48 minutes. The 85-year-old explained that he will step down from the board when Seven merges with Southern Cross Media Group early next year.

“Because I would be arrogant if I didn’t,” he told The Nightly. “For me to say there wasn’t anyone better than I am is arrogant.”

This statement reflected a rare humility for a media mogul, acknowledging that fresh leadership could bring valuable new energy.

Looking Ahead to New Leadership

Assuming no late counteroffer, Heith Mackay-Cruise—a seasoned media and technology executive—will succeed Stokes as chairman.

The new merged entity will unite the Seven Network, The West Australian, and The Nightly with the Triple M and Hit radio networks under one structure. As a 20% shareholder, Stokes will continue to advise the board but emphasized he will not interfere.

“I don’t intend to be the interfering ex, nothing worse,” he told Seven News. “I’m cheering from the side now.”

Legacy of a Builder

Throughout his career, Stokes shaped Australian media through decisive leadership and strategic expansion, leaving a legacy that blends television, print, and digital media.

Author’s summary: Kerry Stokes ends his remarkable media leadership chapter with humility and optimism, confident that a new generation will guide his legacy forward.
