The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has introduced an online map assessing the potential for geothermal energy use in the region. This initiative aims to support further development and investment in sustainable energy projects.
The digital map provides an overview of different application models for geothermal energy and serves as a strategic tool for targeted project planning. By offering transparent data, it lays the groundwork for an informed energy transition in Aargau.
Geothermal energy – particularly for shallow heat extraction with ground source heat pumps – already contributes substantially to a sustainable and secure energy supply and to decarbonization efforts, targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Recognizing Aargau's favorable geological conditions, the Cantonal Government accepted a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to establish a geothermal register identifying potential resources across the municipalities. Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, together with internal and external experts, conducted an in-depth analysis of the region’s geothermal potential.
Aargau has launched an online geothermal map to steer energy development, forming a data-based foundation for regional sustainability and net-zero goals.
