MLB insider Tim Britton from The Athletic projects a significant payday for Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette as the team heads into the offseason. After narrowly missing their first championship in over 30 years, Toronto now faces the challenge of retaining core players while strengthening weaker positions.
Bichette, a two-time All-Star, stands out as one of the team’s key figures to re-sign. However, according to Britton, his next contract could be steep—an estimated eight years at $212 million.
“For Bichette, Willy Adames’ seven-year, $182 million deal with the Giants last winter is particularly helpful. While Adames’ overall production outstrips Bichette’s, the latter has been a better offensive player, and offense gets paid more than defense… Bichette is also a year younger, which could mitigate some of his injury concerns. That’s where the comp to Seager comes in; Seager was a fellow shortstop who performed when healthy but missed plenty of time, and he was paid off his peak performance. Bichette won’t reach those heights, but he should be able to surpass Adames’ deal.”
This season, Bichette posted strong offensive numbers, hitting .311 with an on-base percentage of .357 and a slugging percentage of .483. Over 139 games, he recorded 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBIs.
Bichette’s projected $212 million deal places him among baseball’s highest-valued shortstops, highlighting his offensive edge and strong negotiating position ahead of free agency.
