Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Cole Escola are collaborating to develop a film centered on the iconic Muppets character Miss Piggy. The project is currently in early development at Disney, which holds the rights to the Muppets franchise.
Miss Piggy, who originally appeared on Jim Henson’s “The Muppet Show” in the 1970s, has never before been the lead subject of a feature film. Lawrence and Stone will act as producers, while Cole Escola, a Tony winner for the Broadway play Oh, Mary!, is set to write the screenplay.
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence revealed on the podcast Las Culturistas, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
When asked if Lawrence and Stone would co-star in the film, Lawrence responded, “I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Lawrence explained that the idea for the movie came from Stone during the pandemic lockdown and the height of cancel culture.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,'” Lawrence recalled. “Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
The movie promises to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved character with a contemporary twist inspired by cultural conversations.
