“TODAY” co-anchor Craig Melvin visited his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, to film a special hometown segment nearly a year after joining the anchor desk full-time.
Melvin walked through the halls of his preschool, stepping into the classroom where he first learned to read. Overcome by emotion, he admitted that moment was the highlight of his trip.
“Columbia is just such a warm hug for me every time I go back,” Melvin said.
During his visit, Melvin stopped at Lizard’s Thicket for a local meal, bought artwork from Ernest “The Chicken Man” Lee, and revisited his old barbershop. Each stop reflected his deep connection to the community and its people.
Melvin took over as co-anchor following Hoda Kotb’s departure and has since adapted to the fast pace of national broadcasting. He described 2025 as a year of learning balance amid nonstop travel, media appearances, and community events.
“You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show,” he said.
Author’s summary: Craig Melvin’s return to Columbia captures his emotional connection to his roots while marking a reflective moment after a transformative year on the national stage.
