Special weather statements and warnings are currently active across most of Newfoundland and coastal Labrador. CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler is monitoring a strong storm system described as a "weather bomb" expected to hit the region on Tuesday.
“This is going to be an incredibly strong northeaster,” said Brauweiler.
Significant rainfall of 50 to 70 mm is expected from Tuesday morning across the island, including Avalon, central, and southern coastal regions. Coastal flooding risk is elevated with waves predicted to reach six to nine metres.
The south coast may face hazardous conditions if water levels exceed high tide, Brauweiler noted.
The storm system will start to weaken by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Coastal Labrador is expected to experience the weather from Tuesday night through Friday.
Author’s summary: A powerful “weather bomb” with strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding risk is set to impact Newfoundland and Labrador starting Tuesday, lasting several days.
