China-Laos Sugarcane Import Season Begins

A truck carrying sugarcane from Laos recently entered Mengman Port on the China-Laos border in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan province. This marked the official start of sugarcane deliveries between the two countries for the 2025–26 season, according to Yunnan.cn.

The new import season began on October 29 and will continue until the end of April. More than 930,000 tons of sugarcane are expected to reach China for sugar extraction and related production.

Economic Impact and Production Scale

On the opening day alone, over 1,500 tons of sugarcane were cleared through Mengman Port. The total industrial output value is expected to reach 620 million yuan (87 million US dollars), reflecting about a 12 percent rise compared with the previous season.

Cross-Border Cooperation

The sugarcane industry has formed a stable cooperation model: sugarcane is cultivated in Laos, while sugar is processed and produced in China. This system brings notable economic benefits to both sides.

“As an important part of China-Laos cross-border agricultural cooperation, the sugarcane planting industry has developed a mature model.”

Transport and Customs Efficiency

To handle the surge in transportation during the peak season, the Mohan Border Inspection Station has opened a special clearance channel dedicated to sugarcane. This allows rapid inspection of arriving vehicles and enhances overall clearance efficiency.

Author’s summary: The 2025–26 China-Laos sugarcane import season has begun, solidifying agricultural cooperation and expanding trade efficiency between the two nations.
