Residents urged to evacuate Remington area as 3-alarm building fire rages

Residents Urged to Evacuate Remington Area as Fire Intensifies

City officials have asked some residents to evacuate the Remington neighborhood as a three-alarm fire continues to burn through a commercial building in Baltimore. Firefighters are working to fully contain the flames that started on the building’s exterior and spread rapidly.

Firefighting Efforts

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace stated during a news briefing that his teams are maintaining a defensive perimeter to protect nearby homes and prevent further spread.

“I would not be surprised if, at some point, it does collapse,” said Fire Chief James Wallace.

He emphasized that crews were pouring water from the outside and working tirelessly to shield residential areas on 23rd Street.

“The firefighters from BCF 100% saved the houses back here on 23rd Street,” Wallace said. “They’re inside the homes with handlines, on the roof, and even above the houses with handlines.”

Residents’ Reactions

Local resident Mollie Bailey, who lives on West 23rd Street, recounted that she first noticed the blaze when she smelled smoke early in the afternoon.

“I thought, ‘Oh gosh, did I leave the oven on?’” Bailey said.

Looking out her window, she saw smoke spreading across her neighborhood and later received calls from friends in Hampden who also noticed the plume.

Summary

Officials and firefighters continue battling a massive three-alarm fire threatening Remington homes, as residents flee and crews work relentlessly to prevent building collapse.
