Karnataka enhances sugarcane FRP by ₹100; farmers call off strike

Karnataka increases sugarcane FRP; farmers end protest

After intense discussions with farmer leaders and sugar mill representatives in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has raised the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane by ₹100 per tonne. This decision led farmers to withdraw their strike on Friday.

Revised FRP and contributions

Farmers will now receive ₹3,300 per tonne, excluding harvesting and transportation costs. The Centre had earlier fixed the FRP at ₹3,200 per tonne. The additional ₹100 will be shared equally between the State government and sugar mills, each contributing ₹50.

Meetings and government representation

The announcement followed seven hours of meetings chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and attended by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil, and other senior officials.

“Farmers will now get ₹3,300 per tonne (excluding harvesting and transportation cost) against the FRP of ₹3,200 fixed by the Centre.”

Delegation to the Centre

The government also plans to form an all-party delegation comprising farmer and sugar mill representatives to request the Centre to review policies on sugar pricing. The delegation aims to advocate for higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugar, revised FRP for sugarcane, and greater export and ethanol production limits.

Author’s summary: Karnataka raised sugarcane FRP by ₹100 per tonne, ending farmer protests and prompting new discussions on national sugar pricing policies.
