Metro Manila raises disaster alert to Red as Super Typhoon Uwan looms with possible Signal No. 4 winds - Philippine Information Agency

Metro Manila Raises Disaster Alert to Red

Metro Manila elevated its disaster alert status to Red at 5 p.m. on Friday, mobilizing numerous personnel and heavy rescue equipment across the capital region due to the rapid intensification of Super Typhoon [translate: Уван], which may bring Signal No. 4 winds to Luzon.

Emergency Measures Activated

The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC), led by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes, issued the highest operational alert in preparation for the typhoon’s arrival. It is expected to bring storm-force winds spanning 720 kilometers and heavy rainfall from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday.

Official Statements

“This is our highest state of readiness,” said Office of Civil Defense-NCR Director George F. Keyser during the MMDRRMC emergency meeting. “We are not ruling out Signal No. 4 in the NCR as the volume of rain could be unprecedented, even if the eye makes landfall far north.”

The red alert also mandates coordination among 17 local government units and national government agencies.

“Even if it’s just wind under Signal 3, we are not exactly sure of the rain volume.”

Summary: Metro Manila is on maximum alert ahead of Super Typhoon Uwan, with widespread preparations to handle severe winds and heavy rains possibly reaching Signal No. 4 intensity.
