Gaten Matarazzo Details ‘Disgusting’ Experience Living with ‘Stranger Things’ Co-Star Finn Wolfhard

Gaten Matarazzo’s story

Gaten Matarazzo shared that he and his Stranger Things co-star Finn Wolfhard lived together for about a year while working on the fifth and final season of the Netflix series. He described the overall time as fun and memorable, but also admitted that their apartment quickly became extremely messy.

“Disgusting” college-style living

Matarazzo compared the arrangement to a kind of improvised college experience, with two young actors suddenly managing their own space. After roughly three months of living together, he would look around the place and think that the apartment was “disgusting” and wonder what they were doing.

“I would look around like three months after we lived together and [be] like, ‘This place is disgusting. What are we doing?’”

Matching energy and low standards

According to Matarazzo, the problem came from how well they got along and how similar their habits were. He said they “matched each other’s energy,” had been close friends for a long time, and therefore did not really hold one another to any standard when it came to cleaning.

“We were kind of like, ‘Ah, f--- it. Whatever, man. We’ll get to it later.’”

Avoiding guests at the apartment

The state of the apartment became especially obvious when they tried to make social plans during breaks in filming. When people suggested meeting at their place, both of them would refuse and insist that no one should come near their home because of how untidy it was.

“We would plan to go out, and somebody would be like, ‘Alright, we’ll meet you at yours.’ Both of us would be like, ‘No. Do not come [within] 10 feet [of] our home.’”

Lessons and friendship

Matarazzo said that toward the end of their time living together, they did start to improve their cleaning habits. He also pointed out that moving in with a close friend can be risky because it might damage the relationship, but in their case the friendship stayed strong and the experience remained positive overall.

“When you’re moving in with one of your best friends, you never know if you’re going to live together well. That could ruin friendships. It ruins a dynamic… [But] it was great.”

Gaten Matarazzo recalls his year living with Finn Wolfhard as a chaotic, “disgusting” but ultimately positive, college-like roommate experience that tested and confirmed their long-time friendship.
