Somerset West Taxi Route Reopens Amid Ongoing Dispute
A taxi route from Khayelitsha to Somerset West has been reopened by the Western Cape government after weeks of violence.
The dispute between rival taxi associations, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA), remains unresolved.
- 8 people were killed in August and September due to clashes over route rights.
- The Western Cape Mobility Department closed the routes for a month, affecting commuters who relied on trains and an expanded Golden Arrow bus service.
The violence led to the closure of routes between Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Nomzamo, Lwandle, and Somerset West.
